What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a manual treatment technique that involves the use of sterile, fine filament needles and inserting them into a muscle. These needles are single use and similar to acupuncture needles – so if you’ve had acupuncture before, you may be familiar with the concept already!

The aim of dry needling is to stimulate muscles to relax in order to decrease pain and increase function of the area. This can be especially useful for treating myofascial trigger points, or other muscular injuries, such as tennis elbow.

Dry needling is a safe procedure when done properly. When first contacting the skin and entering the muscle, there may be a sting. This is not always the case however, and sometimes it can even be painless upon entry. Once the trigger point has been found, a dull ache may form, before subsiding fairly quickly. While relatively painless, there may be some discomfort when the needle is moved around to find any remaining trigger points in the area.

After a treatment, there may be a dull ache in the area, especially if you have not had needling done before. This ache should subside within a day.

Chiropractic adjustments can complement the effects of dry needling and vice versa. At North Adelaide Chiropractic, we always aim to give you as many treatment options as possible. Dr Joshua is trained in both manual and non-manual adjustment techniques, and has also completed a dry needling course. If you have a preference for treatment methods, or want to try something new for an old injury, let us know and we will be more than happy to meet your needs.
