Peripheral nerves can be trapped by a large number of structures as they exit out of our spines. For example, a protruded disc from our spine can bulge outwards and pinch a nerve. When this happens, the trapped nerve can become inflamed and damaged. This can lead to abnormal sensations such as burning, tingling, weakness and more.
Another common cause of a trapped nerve is tight muscles. For example, the anterior scalenes can trap some of the nerves running out from our neck, and can lead to ‘thoracic outlet syndrome.’ Similarly, the piriformis muscle can trap our sciatic nerve and cause sciatica.

There are several ways to try and determine where the nerve is trapped. Orthopaedic testing and a thorough history will always be the first step. If needed, you may then be referred for MRI or nerve conduction tests.
