Work ergonomics
More people than ever have started to work from home, and with that change comes new challenges – especially for our spine.
In our blog last year, we talked about how important the office environment was when considering how it affects our spine. Today, we’ll be focusing on a few things to look out for when working from home.
Here are another 3 tips to keep in mind:
- Chairs at home may not be as good as the office ones. Look out for head rests, lumbar supports and arm rests, as these will all help to make sitting easier. If there is a gap between your lower back and your chair, try to fill that space up with a cushion (especially if there isn’t any lumbar support).
- In the office, we may take walking for granted. Walking around the office or walking out to get lunch is a daily activity that comes naturally. At home, it’s a lot easier to forget to walk around. Set aside some time every 2 or 3 hours to stretch and move about.
- While laptops and notepads are useful in their portability, they are not ergonomically friendly. Make sure to have an attachable keyboard and mouse if you want to work on a laptop for a long period. Be prepared to stack some books or papers below the laptop to make sure the screen is the right height.
While these tips may not fix all spinal issues, they can certainly help with decreasing pain symptoms. For personalised advice regarding work stations, or for an even more proactive approach in treating and preventing pain, give us a call on 8361 8182.
