What is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is a group of conditions that affect the space around the collarbone and first rib. The structures in this space can include arteries, nerves and muscles. When compressed, they can cause neck and shoulder pain, and tingling or numbness into the fingers.
While there are several types of TOS, the two main types we will discuss are neurogenic TOS and vascular TOS. Both share similar symptoms (see above) but there are a few differences between the two:
Neurogenic TOS occurs when the brachial plexus is compressed. This can cause muscle wasting, weakness and headaches.
Vascular TOS occurs when the veins or arteries in the collarbone region are compressed. This can cause swelling (edema) and discolouration in the arm, a weak pulse in the wrists, and blood clots in the upper body.
How can chiropractic help TOS?
At North Adelaide Chiropractic, our chiropractor will perform a thorough history and examination to ensure we can identify whether or not TOS is the cause of your issues.
Treatment will be catered according to your needs. Mobilisations and adjustments for the first rib may be necessary to ease off the tension in the area; similarly, soft tissue therapies for the surrounding muscles – such as the anterior scalenes, sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and upper trapezius – can help as well. The initial aim will be to relieve symptoms and decrease pressure off the nerves, as prolonged nerve compression can cause permanent damage if left untreated.
Exercises and advice about daily routines / sleeping positions will also be part of treatment, as it will be important to prevent recurrence of TOS.
If conservative treatment does not work or if symptoms are too severe, surgery may be required as a last resort.
