The sacroiliac joint (referred to as the SIJ) is located beneath our spine and connects our sacrum (the upper part of our ‘tailbone’) with the rest of our pelvis. SIJ syndrome or dysfunction can occur when the SIJ is inflamed, injured and/or stiff. This can be caused through trauma, or even built up over time through extended, poor sitting positions.

Often, pain and tenderness in the area is a key symptom, with prolonged standing, sitting and sit-to-stand movements aggravating the pain. Lying on the side of the affected SIJ can also be uncomfortable and painful.

At North Adelaide Chiropractic, our practitioners are trained in treating SIJ syndrome. Properly diagnosing the cause is the first step towards recovery. If the SIJ syndrome is caused by stiffness of the joint, the main goal would be to getting the joint moving back into its normal range of motion again. Chiropractic adjustments into the SIJ and soft tissue release techniques for hypertonic gluteal muscles and lumbar paraspinals can all help to relieve symptoms of a stiff SIJ.

If the SIJ syndrome is caused instead by excessive movement (hypermobility), it would likely be better for us to look at strengthening the inner core muscles. Which muscles are and aren’t working optimally will be determined by a physical examination.

Lastly, when diagnosing it is important to note that SIJ syndrome can be difficult to differentiate from other causes of low back pain. Thorough orthopaedic testing should be done to make sure there are no other underlying causes of back pain.
