Whiplash Injuries

A whiplash injury is a sudden acceleration-deceleration movement to the neck and head. This type of trauma is common in car accidents and in sports, and can range in severity.

Often, the most common symptom of whiplash associated injuries is neck pain. This can refer into the shoulders or even the head (resulting sometimes in ‘cervicogenic headaches’). For more severe cases of whiplash, nerve roots in the neck may be impinged due to structural damage or inflammation. This impingement of the nerve roots may lead to abnormal sensations into the upper limbs. These symptoms can include numbness, tingling, heaviness, or even weakness in the hands or arms.

Several studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments and treatments can help with whiplash associated injuries. One of the more recent papers is a 2016 Clinical Practice Guideline (https://www.jmptonline.org/article/S0161-4754(16)30192-0/abstract), which noted that “multimodal care” including soft tissue therapy and manipulation, was an “effective treatment strategy” for both acute and chronic neck pain.

At North Adelaide Chiropractic, we offer more than just chiropractic adjustments. We work on muscles and joints together – a multimodal care model – and provide home exercises so that you can recover faster.
