Chronic low back pain focus #2: Spondylolisthesis
A spondylolisthesis is the forward slippage of a vertebral body onto the next vertebrae (or sacrum, if affecting the bottom-most vertebrae) below it. The amount of slippage can range from Grade 1 (25% of vertebral body has slipped forward) to Grade 4 (100% of vertebral body has slipped forward).
If the vertebral body slips too far, it may impinge on nerves that exit through the lower spine. This can cause irritation to nerves in our lower limbs and lead to symptoms such as sciatica. Spondylolisthesis can also cause localized pain in the lower back.
There are several causes for the occurrence of a spondylolisthesis. Genetics, activities or sports that stress the lower back, infection, or trauma can all be potential causes for a spondylolisthesis.
How can North Adelaide Chiropractic help?
Firstly, x-rays will be used to determine if there is a spondylolisthesis present in your spine and how severe it is. The cause of the spondylolisthesis will determine what treatment is required.
Regarding treatment options, chiropractic adjustments can help address fixated joints above and below the level of the spondylolisthesis. Stabilizing the spine via core muscle strengthening can also help to reduce pain caused by spondylolisthesis.
At North Adelaide Chiropractic, Dr Joshua will provide a combination of adjustments, home exercises and muscle strengthening and activation to ensure that you recover as quickly and successfully as possible.
For spondylolisthesis that are too severely painful or have vertebrae that has slipped forward significantly, surgery may be needed.
