Chronic low back pain focus #1 – Pars defects (also known as spondylolysis)
One of the causes of chronic low back pain is a pars defect, or otherwise known as a spondylolysis (sometimes referred to as “spondy” for short) in our lumbar spine. A pars defect is essentially a defect or stress fracture along one of the components that make up our spine. One of the common causes of a pars defect is from young athletes over-training and hyperextending or rotating their lumbar spines.
X-rays can be used to identify the pars defect. At North Adelaide Chiropractic, we can refer for bulk-billed x-rays to make sure that we find any irregularities with your spine, including any existing pars defects.
Treatment for pars defects includes strengthening and rehabilitation as well as adjustments for fixated segments above or below the defect. These adjustments are used in order to free up the joints and place less stress into the affected pars. Back braces can help to a certain extent as well – however, it may not always be the best option as using a brace can actually weaken your core muscles in the long term.
